Fall 2014

(October/November)Welcome to our Fall Wellness Newsletter! Besides getting everyone glowing in rich fall colors and beautiful trendy cuts, or amping up the immune systems for the season with therapeutic massages and Rinnovo oil treatments...We have been busy enjoying Mother Nature’s foliage show, taking get-aways to apple orchards, and browsing the pumpkin patches so we got a bit behind on our newsletter...Hope you enjoy this better late than never edition!

In case you have not heard, we’ve added another amazing member to our Bella Zenn family….Emily Barnetzke, cosmetologist, joined us the end of September and is busy scheduling people who have been on the waiting list, and taking on new clients. We are thrilled to have her aboard and clearly our guests have been enjoying her as well as her availability is also dwindling quickly :) Watch for November specials with Emily on our Facebook page!

In September, the Bella gals took a morning off with our friend and photographer, James Stokes, to create an autumn portfolio. We set up on the Bella Zenn Salon grounds and had a blast! You might have seen a teaser photo on our Facebook page. Some of us were showcasing the latest Grace and Lace vests and boot-toppers. Be sure to check out the cozy scarves and new fall items from that line, available in our Eco-Boutique. A few pesty hornets tried to get in on the action, but we dashed inside for some essential oil Insect-Aside and turned them away. And wait till you hear….Wisconsin Bride Magazine saw the photos and we have been featured in the latest web issue!! You can see that here: http://wibride.com/hair-beauty/vendor-love-meet-two-medford-faves-wi-wedding-scene ...We will also be in a future publication available on shelves soon!

Now that the kids are back to school, be sure to stock up on safe and natural products to help boost immunity and keep them healthy. Consider the Thieves line of home cleaners, hand sanitizers, mouthwash, lozenges and essential oils, including our custom T.K.O. salve. Rumor has it that the dreaded head lice has already invaded some of the schools….but never fear; ask our staff about hair care products for preventing and treating that issue. We have Max Green Scalp Rescue shampoo. Other products containing essential oils of tea tree, citronella, eucalyptus, oregano, chamomile, lavender, or rosemary are also effective. Applying Thieves or Purification to soles of children’s feet twice a day, may make them a less appealing host to those unwanted guests.

Our Aromatherapist, Terri, has been busy hosting educational and entertaining wellness classes in August, September and October. Recent classes were: Everyday Oils 101, Dr. Mom- Using Oils for Children for everything from A-Z, and Living the Oola Life. Let us know if you would like a repeat of any of these, or other wellness topics you are interested in. She is planning to present the 12 Oils of Ancient Scriptures on Monday evening, November 17th at 6pm. This class will be an overview of essential oil history, a biblical reference of ancient and modern day use. We encourage pre-registration as class size is limited so call today! We will also be hosting a class during out 2nd Annual {HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE} which will be Sat, December 13th...watch our Facebook page for more details coming soon!

Autumn is a good time to incorporate essential oils into your cooking. Not only are they flavorful, but add therapeutic value as well. Add a few drops of nutmeg, clove, cinnamon bark, ginger or citrus oils to warm cider, pumpkin, or apple recipes. Remember, the oils are VERY concentrated, so just one drop, or a toothpick dipped into the bottle and swirled in your recipe, is all that you need. Here’s our recipe you might want to try:

Citrus-C French Toast Syrup: 1 C. fresh maple syrup* ¼ C. fresh orange juice 1 tsp orange rind, grated 4 T. butter 3 drops Young Living Orange oil. Combine all together and simmer in pan on stove 5 minutes. Mix: 6 beaten eggs ½ C. milk( may use soy, almond, coconut) 1 T. honey*( or blue agave) 1 tsp orange rind 3 drops YL orange oil 1-2 drops YL cinnamon bark oil 8 slices bread

Dip bread in mix. Sautee in lightly buttered fry pan on both sides. Serve with syrup.

*For your convenience, we carry local honey and maple syrup in our Eco-Boutique

Healthy Activities: >>-->Enjoy the nice weather while it lasts. Carve out 15-30 minutes for a walk; you will regret not having done it when the not-so-nice weather arrives. >>-->Pile up the leaves and have a blast with the kids. >>-->Take in the Harvest Fest activities in Medford, catch the late fall Farmer's Markets, or get crafty with carving pumpkins and gourds from the late harvests >>-->For emotional health, read the book: Oola: Find Balance in an Unbalanced World

We are busy thinking up classes, activities, custom salves and putting final touches on our holiday events….so watch for updates on Facebook or call to be on our "inform" list. As always, from the Bella Zenn Salon Spa staff……. Be well!

Summer 2014

Another school year has drawn to a close. Is everyone is looking forward to the lazy days of summer? Well…perhaps lazy isn’t quite appropriate, as we all gear up for graduation parties, vacations, summer recreation teams, swim lessons, gardening, fishing, and marshmallow-toasting. Whatever your summer plans include, we have products and services at Bella Zenn that are sure to get your season launched in style. Let’s start with fun new shades, like Disco Inferno and Hijinks of Spa Ritual Polish for our Ritual Element pedicures and snazzy, lacey shorts extenders from Grace and Lace, to tuck beneath those Daisy Dukes, our Eco-Boutique is sure to have something for you or unique gift ideas for others. Check out our Facebook page, Bella Zenn Salon Spa & Eco-Boutique, we posted a pic of Carrie and Chelsea modeling our dress extenders…super cute and classy! We have a fresh selection of repurposed wine bottle oil lamps, locally crafted aprons in adult and youth styles, one-of-a-kind earrings, and our newest custom salve, Happy Heart: A skin-smoothing, soul-soothing salve with rose, jasmine, bergamot and other essential oils that promote lovely skin and a positive mood.

In our wellness class offerings, Terri presented, “The Alternative Medicine Chest”: Using Essential Oils to replace OTC drugs and other health and beauty products. This class was on June 2nd at 6 PM. We are considering future sessions earlier in the day, let us know what you think about that. In May, Terri presented “The 12 Oils of Ancient Scripture”, which focused on the historical background of essential oil use, and modern day uses for oils such as myrrh, hyssop, frankincense and cassia. Participants were able to smell the holy anointing oil and hear about the ancient camel caravan route that transported spices and oils from southern Arabia to the Holy Land. We plan to schedule this class again for those who weren’t able to attend.

We’ve mentioned this in the past, but it bears repeating. There is nothing like gardening to help relieve stress. We have a garden stepping stone that says, “An hour in the garden puts life’s problems in perspective.” It is hard not to feel the joy of childhood, when getting your fingers and toes all covered in mud. And it is impossible not to appreciate the existence of a higher power, when watching the seasonal display of blooming perennials. Modern science has even discovered the health benefits of *grounding or earthing. You can do your own research on the concept, but basically allowing your bare feet to wriggle in the dirt, or taking an afternoon rest stretched out on the lawn, can have positive impact on your health.

*“Grounding,” also called “Earthing” is the landmark discovery that Earth’s subtle surface energy field upholds the electrical stability of our bodies; thus serving as a foundation for vitality and health. In an age of rampant chronic disease due to the stresses of modern day lifestyle, reconnecting with the Earth’s energy beneath our feet provides a way back to better health. The profound effect of Grounding provides amazing healing, calming and balancing effects on the physical, mental and emotional bodies.

Welcome to Wellness March/April 2014

Welcome to the “Almost Spring” issue of our newsletter. We enjoyed a little tease by Mother Nature of temperatures above 50 degrees last week, and even if those days didn’t last, we know that spring can’t be too far away. Spring….. brings to mind- Prom, Easter bonnets, new birth, maple syrup and spring CLEANING!

And we have something here at Bella Zenn for all those occasions. If you haven’t visited us lately, be sure to stop in and see the new clothing and accessories line of Grace and Lace; featuring camisoles, sweaters, wraps, scarves and leg warmers/boot toppers. Our local crafters are also keeping us supplied with warm woolen mittens ( since winter is STILL here) , dryer balls, hats and hair décor.

As we come out of hibernation, we find ourselves needing to shed a few layers of clothes, as well as a few pounds that accumulated over the holidays and the looong months being indoors and less active.

Our Steam and Detox Treatment can help jump start a diet and exercise program. Combining therapeutic essential oils, ancient sea mud and medicinal herbs, the 3-day Detox package will have you spring cleaning yourself! With Easter and Mother’s Day upon us soon, keep in mind this pampering spa treatment, when gift ideas are needed.

Citrusy essential oils, such as lemon, grapefruit or a blend called Citrus Fresh can be added to your drinking water, to aid in releasing toxins from the cellulite tissues. Besides cleaning our bodies, the citrus essential oils make great cleaning solutions to detox our homes with healthier alternatives to chemical-laden commercial products. Terri’s presentation at Women’s Weekend was all about Detoxing Your Home, so ask our staff about Thieves products and other essential oils that are great at fighting germs and making things sparkle.

For any new moms-to-be and/ or newborns, we have created a NEW custom salve: MomEase & BabeEase- it is an emollient salve using coconut and olive oils and a gentle blend of essential oils good for preventing stretch marks, calming anxiety( maybe good for DadEase in the delivery room?), soothing fussy babies and even warding off postpartum blues. With Prom coming soon and the beginning of the popular wedding months, maybe it’s time to start thinking about trying our new natural mineral make up, Alima Pure. If you aren’t sure how to use it, or what colors work best for you, consider scheduling a Beauty School 101 appointment for some expert hands-on advice.

OIL OF THE MONTH – LEMON

Lemon oil, like other citrus plant oils, is cold-expressed from the plant peels, rather than being steam-distilled like most essential oils. Lemon is one of the most useful and versatile oils to have on hand. Its powerful antioxidant, limonene, supports a healthy immune system and is a natural disinfectant. Its zesty aroma uplifts the mind and energizes the body. As mentioned above, lemon oil can be used in the house for removing grease spots, crayon marks, adhesives and to clean windows and polish furniture. Lemon oil from a reputable source may also be taken internally, used in place of lemon juice in cooking or to flavor water. Keep a bottle of diluted lemon oil in water to cleanse produce, wipe down counter tops and neutralize kitchen smells.

Special in store offer* 10% off* any Lemon Oil product or Citrus Fresh blend while supplies last

Healthy Spring Activities

Start a family garden. Begin getting the soil ready to plant flowers and vegetables. If you have limited space, try growing herbs in pots. Home-grown vegetables and herbs are great money savers and ensure they're available for healthy summer meals and snacks. Fresh herbs are also a tasty alternative to salt, when cooking. Go old school. Help your children draw hopscotch or four square courts on the sidewalk. Sidewalk chalk is a colorful and inexpensive way for children to create their own activity space. Plan a nature scavenger hunt. Pick up small nets and mason jars for kids to use to catch butterflies or interesting insects, and collect flowers in the neighborhood or at a local park.

Healthy Recipe: Flaxseed Wrap for Anything!

Welcome to Wellness - January/February 2014

Holy Cow! Happy 2014! It's hard to believe we're entering the second month of the new year! We hope you all had a wonderful holiday season! We've taken some time to reflect on this past year and would like to share some of our thoughts with you. As you know, our highlight from of 2013 was, of course, moving into our brand new home last February. Yep! We're getting ready to celebrate our first year here already!! We want to take a minute to thank all of you for the cards, gifts, words of encouragement and support of our business over the year and especially during the holiday season. We had a great turn out for our Holiday Open House, in spite of freezing weather, and hope all of you can join us next year. We are continuously amazed and humbled by your support. Most of us make New Year's resolutions like eating healthier, exercising more, staying touch with friends and family, or being more positive. We start out strong on January 1st, and within a few weeks our good intentions fall by the wayside. How about making a resolution to actually stick to ONE resolution! It helps break down a big goal (like losing 20 pounds or running a 5k), to smaller goals (like drinking more water with added lemon essential oil to promote weight loss or walking 10 minutes daily). Try to send a text, email or call to a different person you've been meaning to stay in touch with each day. We always say we're too busy, but who knows how that surprise contact might affect someone's day.

We're happy to announce we've raised enough funds for our first Project Ignite recipient. The donations have come from salon patrons who have purchased the little items made by some of our staff (campfire starters, air fresheners, and "Plarneys"). The Bella Zenn staff is ready to take nominations for a person who you feel is deserving of an hour of pampering in our Salon Spa. We would like to keep the names of those selected confidential and anonymous so just mention this person to our salon staff and we will consider them for this special treat.

Looking ahead, we are excited to be part of Destination Medford: Women's Weekend again on February 21-23. We will be hosting morning and afternoon classes featuring Essential Oils for a Healthy Home and Beauty School 101, as well as being a stop on the Saturday evening wine walk...visit the Medford Area Chamber of Commerce site for all the details.

One of our resolutions is to offer more product knowledge to you! We are introducing an Oil of the Month feature in this monthly newsletter. We hope to provide useful information on the therapeutic benefits of a particular oil, practical uses and in-salon purchase offers.

OIL OF THE MONTH - FRANKINCENSE

As you may know, frankincense has been in use for thousands of years. We are familiar with the biblical accounts of the gifts the Magi brought to baby Jesus. There are two types of frankincense essential oil commonly available: boswellia carteri and boswellia sacra (or sacred frankincense). It is also available in a resin form, that can be burned in a special burner. Both of the oils have an earthy, balsamic scent. The oil had calming properties that can promote spirituality and inner strength. It is used to support skin health, and ongoing research has shown it promotes cell regeneration and has anti-cancer properties. It promotes, slow. deep breathing. The "sacra: variety enhances a meditation/prayer/reflection experience to a higher level.

SPECIAL: 10% off any Frankincense in store while supplies last

As always, we hope you enjoyed reading this edition of Welcome to Wellness!

November 2013

Welcome, old friends and new, to the November Bella Zenn Salon Spa newsletter. If you are like us, you’re gearing up for the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays that are just around the corner. So much to do….so little time….and panic can set in. That is why it is so important to make it a priority to focus on your physical and mental well-being. We want to give a shout-out of thanks to our friend, Rachel Louret, who hosted an evening of fun and information last month. Guests were able to tour her round house, sample some yummy and healthy refreshments, and learn about the concept and benefits of Feng Shui. Our aromatherapist, Terri, was on hand to talk about essential oil use for a healthy home. With such positive feedback, we hope to repeat this offering in the future.

The holiday season is about connecting with friends and loved ones. Try not to get so hung up on all the details (cleaning, shopping, decorating, baking, cooking, wrapping) that you don’t take time to experience the special moments. Baking is fine…if you enjoy it. Team up with a few friends for a cookie exchange, or spend some time with kids or grandkids for a memory-building activity. However, if the very thought stresses you out, support the local church bake sales or kids’ fundraisers, for an easy, guilt-free way to stock up on goodies. Shopping….you either love it or hate it! Let Bella Zenn help you there, with unique and healthy gifts from our Eco-Boutique, or the always coveted spa gift certificate. Remember, by shopping local, you not only boost our community economy, but also save on gas costs and avoid the germ-laden crowds.

Speaking of germs, prevention is the key to avoiding illnesses which can hinder your holiday fun. Many essential oils have been proven to kill viruses and bacteria, responsible for the common cold, flu and even staph and strep infections. Limonene, found in lemon, and other citrus oils, has been shown in university studies to kill germs that cause MRSA, pneumonia and TB. Thieves essential oil blend and Thieves health and cleaning products contain lemon oil, along with cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus and rosemary. Our Rinnovo treatment is a massage incorporating 14 beneficial essential oils. If you will be traveling over the holidays or not able to avoid crowds, consider the Rinnovo as part of your preventive health care.

And remember to schedule time for relaxing and enjoyable activities. Even if you no longer have school age children, try to attend the local choir, band, and school Christmas programs. The smile on the children’s faces brings joy to your heart.

We have a fun and festive evening planned for you. The Bella Zenn Salon Spa and Eco-Boutique will be hosting our holiday open house on Friday, December 6th from 5-8 PM. Featuring live musical performance by Beautiful Buzz, a folk rock acoustic duo; refreshments, crafty activities, chair massage and the chance to win prizes, it will be an evening you won’t want to miss! We will also be introducing our seasonal signature salves: Comfort & Joy, Silent Night and Sugarplum Spice. Hope to see you there.

All of us at Bella Zenn Salon Spa wish you and yours a blessed Thanksgiving…and as always, Be Well!

Health Benefits of Pumpkin It is one of the very low calorie vegetables. 100 g fruit provides just 26 calories and contains no saturated fats or cholesterol; however, it is rich in dietary fiber, anti-oxidants, minerals, vitamins. The vegetable is one of the food items recommended by dieticians in cholesterol controlling and weight reduction programs. Pumpkin is a storehouse of many anti-oxidant vitamins such as vitamin-A, vitamin-C and vitamin-E. With 7384 mg per 100 g, it is one of the vegetables in the Cucurbitaceae family featuring highest levels of vitamin-A, providing about 246% of RDA. Vitamin A is a powerful natural anti-oxidant and is required by the body for maintaining the integrity of skin and mucus membranes. It is also an essential vitamin for good visual sight. Research studies suggest that natural foods rich in vitamin A help a body protects against lung and oral cavity cancers. It is also an excellent source of many natural poly-phenolic flavonoid compounds such as α, ß carotenes, cryptoxanthin, lutein and zea-xanthin. Carotenes convert into vitamin A inside the body. Zea-xanthin is a natural anti-oxidant which has UV (ultra-violet) rays filtering actions in the macula lutea in retina of the eyes. Thus, it helps protect from "age-related macular disease" (ARMD) in the elderly. The fruit is a good source of B-complex group of vitamins like folates, niacin, vitamin B-6 (pyridoxine), thiamin and pantothenic acid. It is also rich source of minerals like copper, calcium, potassium and phosphorus. Pumpkin seeds indeed are an excellent source of dietary fiber and mono-unsaturated fatty acids, which are good for heart health. In addition, the seeds are concentrated sources of protein, minerals and health-benefiting vitamins. For instance, 100 g of pumpkin seeds provide 559 calories, 30 g of protein, 110% RDA of iron, 4987 mg of niacin (31% RDA), selenium (17% of RDA), zinc (71%) etc., but no cholesterol. Further, the seeds are an excellent source of health promoting amino acid tryptophan. Tryptophan is converted to GABA in the brain.

Overnight Oatmeal 1 C. oatmeal (steel-cut or regular) 1 or 2 chopped apples ½ C. raisins ½ C. chopped walnuts or pecans 1 1/2 C. milk 1 ½ C. water ¼ C. packed brown sugar 1 T. ground flaxseed 1 T. melted butter ¼ tsp salt ½ tsp cinnamon This can be made in either a ceramic or stoneware covered casserole in oven, or in a crock pot. Coat desired cooking utensil with cooking spray. Place all ingredients inside and mix well. Cook in oven at 200 degrees for 6-8 hours, or in crock pot at low setting for 6-8 hours.

We hope you have found this issue of our newsletter helpful, and as always, from the entire Bella Zenn Salon Spa team, Be Well!

August 2013

As we enjoy these lingering days of summer with family and friends, we are starting to gear up for fall activities: back-to-school shopping and hair style spruce-ups, tailgating parties, end of the season camp-outs and cabin closings.

With camping in mind, we wanted to be sure you have all heard about our “Project Ignite”. It’s a way for us at Bella Zenn, to allow you to help us, help others. Our staff has made fire starters (from 100% recycled materials). These handy items make starting that bonfire or s’mores campfire a cinch. For a recommended donation of $1.00, you’ll have six fire starters. They are available in our Eco-Boutique. All of the proceeds will be turned into gift certificates for worthy candidates, to receive an hour of pampering with services of their choice. Nominees to receive these might include caregivers, persons with health issues, or anyone in need of an hour of “me” time, who might not otherwise have the financial means or mindset to treat themselves.

Once all of you moms have survived the annual back-to-school shopping expeditions, take time to reward yourselves with a facial or other relaxing spa treatment.Stop in and check out our in-house specials. Currently we have Scotch Naturals nail color on sale. Also, handmade terracotta aromatherapy pendants are 25% off. These may be worn as a necklace or hung in a room or car to disperse essential oils. Keep your eyes open for other specials that will be in the Star News and the insert, The Classic, featuring our newest Stylist Tara, our Nail Technician, Jane, and our certified Aromatherapist, Terri.

The Bella Zenn trip to Munson Bridge Winery was definitely a hit, and probably an annual event. We didn’t get quite enough people interested in riding the bus, so we went to Plan B and loaded several cars full. We are already brainstorming our next social outing.

With everyone so busy getting kids off to college and school, we have opted not to have a Wellness Class in August, but we will be posting dates soon for other fun and educational classes that our staff are preparing…(here’s a sneak preview; Dancing for Fun and Fitness, Beauty School 101, the Benefits of Feng Shui). And if any of our clients have ideas for classes that you would like us to offer, be sure to let us know.

We are planning to be a stop on Medford's City Wide Garage Sale September 6th from 8:00-5:00. Come see what gently-used clothes and accessories, household décor and other items that our gals have decided to part with.

We thought this healthy and simple –to- make recipe would be a good lunch box or after school treat..that is, if mom doesn’t polish them off first!

Of course, as with all things, too much may negate those benefits, and moderation is the key. Studies have shown that red wine may prevent heart attacks, increase “good” cholesterol, and have anticoagulant and anti-inflammatory properties. White wine and champagne also have higher antioxidant effects, than red wine. And if you are seeking the lowest calorie option, champagne is your choice. Studies are now revealing that moderate white wine or champagne consumption may lessen chance of getting Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. The phenolic acid found in the skins of black grapes, used to make champagne, helps to improve memory. In general, 1 five ounce glass of wine for women, and 2 glasses for men, three times a week should help reap the benefits without getting into any negative effects. And of course, nothing better for the spirit, than sitting around a campfire, with good friends, good food, good wine. Welcome to Wellness April 2013

Welcome to Wellness

We can’t believe it! We have been in our new location for a full month already! After an exciting start with participation in Destination Medford Women’s Weekend, moving into our new salon, having a booth at the Medford Home and Business Expo (which by the way, took 1st place for booth presentation), having a staff photo shoot with our amazingly talented friend James Stokes, and celebrating mutual March birthdays of Vanessa, Chelsea, and Erin, we are finally taking a deep breath and getting down to day-to-day business...and LOVING it!

But don’t let that and our relaxing new atmosphere fool you into thinking we're slowing down the pace and excitement anytime soon. Starting with the kick-off to our new {Wellness Classes} we plan to do periodically, we hosted our first hands-on class. We made healthy salves: Anti-Aging Face Salve, Peaceful Child Salve, and Soothing Skin Salve, made with a base of coconut and olive oils and beeswax, plus specially blended therapeutic grade essential oils, these salves smell great and are a healthy alternative to commercial products containing petroleum and other harmful chemicals.

Coming April 17th, we will be hosting an informative session on women’s financial wellness; learning how to budget and overcome obstacles that get in the way of your finances presented by the professionals of Thrivent Financial. We'll also be introducing something special we have in the works with The Filling Station Cafe & Bar!! Pre-registration will be required and limited to the first 15 ladies. More details and registration will be available at the Salon Spa & Eco-Boutique the beginning of April!

We have been enjoying positive feedback from recipients of one of our new treatments, The Rinnovo, meaning "Be Renewed" (essential oil application) offered by our in house RN and Certified Aromatherapist, Terri! We also want to get the word out about another new spa service The Benessere, meaning "Be Well." This is a steam canopy treatment that may be used alone, or as an addition to a traditional therapeutic massage. The benefits of steam/heat therapy have been used for centuries by people of many cultures; Scandinavian saunas, Roman mineral baths, Indian sweat lodges, to name a few. The health benefits of our steam canopy include: pain relief, muscle relaxation, detoxification, immunity boosting, and weight loss. Our spa staff can customize a treatment package to suit your needs.

Now that Terri has settled onto the Bella team, we're excited to announce another new member! Jane Antros will be joining us the beginning of April as our new nail technician! Jane formerly owned her own nail salon in Tomahawk for 10 years prior to moving to this area about a year ago. She's very knowledgable and passionate about natural nail care and educating on the benefits of healthy nail options, and she and is eager to join us to offer you her experitise in our spa hand and foot care treatments..especially now that we can offer two pedicures at once!!

Our shelves are stocked with the natural hair and skin products you've come to know and love: Max Green Alchemy, John Masters and…. Innersense has arrived! A very popular eco-friendly home product is our collection of Earth Dance Candles and naturally scented soy “Puddles," for melting in wax warming pots/ Earth Dance is a family owned company and they hand mix and pour their products right in Chippewa Falls, WI! We're also adding in more locally crafted items, too! We can't wait to share all of this local talent with you!

Our Good For You Recipe this month, is an activity and recipe all in one- not meant to be eaten…but safe if accidentally ingested!

Homemade Play-Dough with disinfecting Essential Oils Ingredients: 1 C white flour; ¼ cup table salt; 2 T. cream of tartar. Combine, and add 1 C water, 2 t. food coloring, 1 T. oil

Cook on stovetop over medium heat, stirring continuously for 3-5 minutes. When it forms a ball in center of the pot, turn out on lightly floured surface and knead. At this step, sprinkle with a few drops of your favorite essential oil ( Thieves, lemon, tea tree are all good germ-fighters). Allow to cool before playing with it. Stores well in plastic bag or airtight container.

Finally, as the welcoming spring thaw approaches, we will apologize in advance, for the state of our parking lot. Having started our building project when we did in November, there wasn’t time to pave the parking area. So please bear with the slush and mud, and use the temporary walkways we will provide.

From all the staff at Bella Zenn Salon Spa.....Be well!

Welcome to Wellness

Welcome to WellnessFebruary 2013

DRUM ROLL PLEASE……the BellaZenn SalonSpa has officially moved to our new location at 515 North Seventh Street. We can’t wait to show off our lovely space and start serving you here! We were glad to see several familiar faces at Women’s Weekend for the Herbal Medicine Chest Essential Oils class and the Art &Wine Tour. We’ve heard a lot of ladies were buzzin’ about Bella…Thanks for all the support!

We remain Medford’s first 100% non-toxic SalonSpa, and will continue to carry the quality hair and skin products you’ve become familiar with. Naturally, we’ve added a few new things too.

In our Eco-Boutique you will find more locally, or Wisconsin-produced, skin care, jewelry, candles, tea and other treats…great gifts for men or women of all ages…or just for pampering yourself. One new line is “Fruit of the Vine” which features soaps, skin creams and body oils; all with organic, chemical free ingredients and scented with pure essential oil. They have a special baby bottom cream and even soap for cleaning your pooch as muddy spring weather approaches.

As we mentioned last month, our newest team member is Terri Hubbard, a certified Aromatherapist, as well as an RN of over 30 years. She is excited to offer a new SALONSPA SERVICE TO EXPERIENCE called The Rinnovo (Be Renewed); a total back and foot treatment combining 14 therapeutic essential oils, designed to enhance wellness by relieving pain, relaxing muscles, relieving stress and boosting immunity. It may be received solo or can be combined with a traditional massage session if desired.

Here are our thoughts about a GOOD FOR YOU ACTIVITY to chase away the winter doldrums. Take that stack of gardening and seed catalogs that have been arriving in the mail like flocks of returning birds, carve out an hour (or two) for yourself, and sit down with a relaxing cup of tea. Might we suggest one from our new line - Fava Tea Company; Roasted Almond Chai is one of our favorites. It might be too early to start digging in the soil, but just the right time to consider a new perennial, design a little herb garden, or plan a rainbow of vegetable varieties.

In lieu of a GOOD FOR YOU RECIPE this month, we thought we’d share some information about a healthy addition to anyone’s diet. Have you been introduced to chia seeds yet? Chia seeds, most popularly known as the sprouted hair of a Chia Pet, have been used medicinally and as a food source for centuries by the ancient Mayans, Incas and Aztecs. This “superfood” was considered so powerful that it was believed to be more valuable that gold. This seed is full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, fiber and protein. Aside from chia being a nutritious food source, it may also help balance blood sugar levels and lower cholesterol. These powerful little gems, with a slightly nutty taste, can be sprinkled on salads or added to smoothies…YUM!

Welcome to Wellness January 2013

Welcome to Wellness2013 - A whole new year, a whole new outlook and a lot to look forward to. Last year we realized we had outgrown the current space we‘ve been renting since opening our SalonSpa in August 2011 . We learned, to remain an independently owned small business, we’d need to find a suitable space in a different location. We found our {permanent} SalonSpa home at 515 N. 7th Street - it‘s natural and serene yet right in the city of Medford. With one month left of our current lease, we’re getting pretty excited to open the doors to the new BellaZenn SalonSpa! Don’t worry, we’ll still offer all of the Earth friendly, non-toxic choices we do, we’re just expanding our space, our services menu and our professional product lines to better serve YOU, our client friends.

February is the last month to use original Eartha Naturals gift certificates for services with Chelsea, Erin, Jessica or Vanessa. Please call soon to set up an appointment, our appointments fill quickly! We have a temporary number to reach our appointment desk directly, (715) 965-1226. BellaZenn gift certificates WILL be transferable to our new location.

Suffering from the winter blues? We have a refreshing SalonSpa Service to Experience! Come in and let us help you get away for a little while. For the month of February you can receive the Organic Facial and Ritual Element Pedicure, a $95 value, for $80!!

Mark you calendar for February 22-24. Our new SalonSpa will be making its debut as part of the Medford Area Chamber of Commerce’s Destination Medford Women’s Weekend 2013. We might not have all the decorating quite perfected but our doors will be open for tours and friendly faces as we’re a stop on the Wine Walk. We are pleased to announce we have Registered Nurse and Certified Aroma Therapist, Terri Hubbard, joining our team. She’ll be an educator during Women’s Weekend, teaching “The Alternative Medicine Chest”, an introductory class about the beneficial use of essential oils. For more information about Women’s Weekend please visit www.medfordwis.com or call the Chamber at (715) 748-4729. A list of Terri’s services will be available in our updated menus which will be available soon.

And, last but not least, our Good for You Recipe this month is a guilt free version of the Girl Scout cookie classic…The Samoa. We found this recipe on the Real Sustenance Facebook page. For more guilt/gluten/dairy free recipes, here is the website- www.realsustenance.com

Gluten Free Samoa Cookies

Crust: 2 Cups Blanched Almond Flour, 1 T Tapioca, Arrowroot or Potato Starch, 3 T Butter, Ghee, Earth Balance or Coconut Oil, 1/3 Cup Granulated Sugar, 1/8 tsp Salt, 1/4 tsp. Baking Soda, 1 T Vanilla Extract or Water, 1 T Applesauce

Caramel: 3/4 Cup Butter/ Earth Balance/ or Coconut Oil, 1 1/4 Cup ” Brown Sugar” (note: this can be regular brown sugar or Sucanat or Palm Sugar), 1/4 Cup Liquid Sugar (Agave, Coconut Nectar, Brown Rice Syrup, or Corn Syrup), 6 oz (half a can) of heavy Coconut Milk (Mimic Cream or regular heavy cream also work), 1/2 Tsp Salt.

Topping: Chocolate Chips (melted in microwave), Toasted Unsweetened Coconut Flakes. (toast in oven in pan at 350, 5-8 minutes)

Please Note : Due to the fact that this is a shortbread cookie crust- it is on the crumbly side. I found that it was a little bit difficult to cut out each cookie and then also cut out the inner circle. That was- until I tried using my awesome donut cutter! If you don’t want to bother sourcing this tool or something similar- you can just cut the cookies into circles (or another fun shape) They will still turn out really gorgeous!

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 2. Make the shortbread crust. In a food processor (or by hand) combine all of the crust ingredients. The dough should hold together. Roll the dough out between 2 sheets of parchment paper to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into rings or circles (see note above). Cut out the dough soon after you make it, as it sits out it will begin to feel oily and it won’t hold together quite as well. 3. Carefully place the cut-out cookies on a parchment covered baking sheet and bake 10-12 minutes. Keep a careful watch on them the last few minutes to avoid burning. (note: cookies will come out soft and somewhat chewy- they will gain their shortbread texture as they cool!)Remove from oven. While they are cooling, make the caramel. 4. Combine all of the Caramel ingredients in a heavy bottomed sauce pan and bring to a gentle boil. Using a candy thermometer keep track of the temperature. Remove the caramel from heat once it reaches 248 degrees. 5. Spoon the hot caramel onto the cookies (you will only need about a T or less per cookies) Sprinkle the toasted coconut flakes on top of the hot caramel before it cools. 6. Melt chocolate chips in your microwave (stirring every 30 seconds until smooth). Dip the bottom of each cookie into the melted chocolate. Place the cookies on a sheet of clean parchment paper. Drizzle the tops with some more chocolate to give the Samoa’s their classic look. 7. Set aside and let the chocolate set. (In a hurry to try one? Place them in the fridge or freezer for a few minutes).

Wellness Wednesday November/December 2012

Whew! Can you believe we’re getting to the end of another year? It seems like we were just saying this about the Holidays last year. We hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday last week. We sure enjoyed time with our families! Before we jump on the Christmas train in just a minute, we’d like to take a moment to reflect on what we’re thankful for. First and foremost, we’re thankful to God for all of our talents. We gladly share our gifts with you through our services and friendship. We’re thankful to live in the community we do. We are fortunate to not face the daily dangers many in the world do. We are thankful to be Americans where through faith, hard work and a resilient character dreams will not be diminished. We’re thankful for the awesome natural  products we have found to work with and offer to you. Our business is beauty and we’re proud to be Medford’s first non-toxic beauty option. You might have heard us mention this one before, it’s in just about every issue, we are thankful for the amazing client friends we’ve met on our journey. Whether you’ve been here once or see us regularly, we are inspired and truly humbled by your support - THANK YOU!

We’ll do our best to share our knowledge with you. J

And now, Christmas. It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Our halls are decked thanks to the talented Wedding Gallery ladies. We still offer our popular seasonal aromas like peppermint (scrub) and chocolate (mask) to incorporate into our pedicures and massages. This year we have a new aroma, warm vanilla and brown sugar…YUM!  As always, our aromas are natural NOT synthetic perfumes. We’re making gift giving extra wonderful for anyone giving the gift of a gift certificate. Our gift certificate special is as follows now through the month of December: For every gift certificate purchased, the buyer is entered into our $50 SalonSpa Cash drawing. Yep, that’s right, $50 for the winner to spend on whatever service(s) they’d like. Every Friday is Black Friday at BellaZenn, in addition to the drawing, every $25.00 gift certificate purchased on Friday earns a FREE $5.oo! We’ll either add it on to the certificate ($25 = $30) OR we’ll  give the buyer a $5.00 gift certificate of their own, the more you buy the more you can earn FREE for yourself. YAY!

Our last GOOD FOR YOU RECIPE of the year is NO BAKE PUMPKIN PIE. A delightful little treat that is Gluten free, Soy free and Vegan.

Crust Ingredients: 2C almond meal, ¼ C Agave, 3 Medjool Dates

Filling Ingredients: 2/3 can (about 1 C) pumpkin pree, ¼ C nut milk, 1/3 C brown sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice, 1 tsp vanilla extract

Crust Directions: Combine all crust ingredients in a blender or food processor and blend for 45 seconds. Remove crust mix from blender and place in a pie plate. Press dough to form a crust.

This is an extremely versatile crust and can be used in just about any recipe, any time. No need for a nasty store bought wheat and soy laced crust L All natural, all healthy J

Filling Directions: Combine everything in Vita-Mixer, food processor or Magic Bullet and blend/mix well. Scoop filling into pie crust and place in fridge or freezer to set.  Quick set by freezing for 15 minutes and then store in fridge until served.

Optional: omit nut milk and brown sugar completely and use ¼ to 1/3 C agave instead.

Enjoy!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Chelsea, Erin, Jessica and Vanessa, your Beauty and Wellness Professionals at BellaZenn SalonSpa. We look forward to the possibilities waiting to unfold in 2013.

Wellness Wednesday - October 2012

Wellness Wednesday - October 2012

Any one feeling the need to hibernate for a little while? It’s always amazing how a little less sunlight makes the idea of a good nap a lot more appealing. Could it also be the cooler temperatures? There is something renewing about a rainy fall day spent wrapped in a cozy blanket with a good book. These are the days we’ll longing for when the snow starts to fly soon!

Have you heard we’re expanding?! For the past year and a half we have leased the salon space within the Eartha Naturals building. Thanks to you, our amazing client friends (we really can’t say that enough!!), we’ve outgrown our current location.  We have enjoyed starting Medford’s first NON-TOXIC SalonSpa here. We’re super excited to embark on this new adventure and BellaZenn SalonSpa founder and stylist, Chelsea, has been working very hard to find the ideal location. We look forward to sharing this journey with you. We’ll keep you updated in the salon and on Facebook as things progress.

We plan to be in our new home in March 2013.

For now, we’re going to continue to do what we do, the way we do and that includes giving you some healthful, fun info right here!

Welcome to Wellness

The GOOD FOR YOU ACTIVITY isn’t just one activity, but many! We highly recommend checking out the HARVEST DAYS activities happening this weekend, October 25th - 28th,  right here in Medford! If you’re reading this online, we DO have a schedule of events in the salon. This old-fashioned, family fun is put on by the Medford Area Chamber of Commerce. The SalonSpa team has entered the Great Pumpkin Race - a 5K run/walk around Medford. Some of the other activities include a weekend long scavenger hunt and a chili contest. Saturday morning kid-friendly fun makes this a great way to get outside and spend time together as a family. Sunday there is the Harvest Days/Halloween Parade AND trick or treating to follow. Stop by the Chamber office located at 104 E Perkins Street for more information and to sign up for activities and contests. We hope to see you out and about!

Our GOOD FOR YOU RECIPE that we’ve selected is a yummy treat containing almonds, pecans and oats. Eating nuts (in moderation) is a good source for healthy fats, a variety of minerals and protein. This satisfying snack uses a healthy sugar alternative and will make a nice addition at any pot luck or upcoming holiday meal!

Fall Balls

Ingredients: 1 C coarsely ground almonds, 1 C coarsely ground pecans, 1 C finely ground oats OR ¾ C any nut flour, 2 T coconut oil, just softened, ¼ C maple syrup, 1 T pure vanilla extract.

Directions: Mix all ingredients in a medium mixing bowl, form into balls and freeze on wax paper for 10-15 minutes. You may want to roll in coconut flakes, ground chocolate pieces or chia seeds before freezing for added texture and flavor. Also try PUMPKIN fall balls by adding 1-2 T pumpkin butter, CHOCOLATE fall balls by adding 1-2 T cocoa powder or CINNAMON by adding 1 T ground cinnamon to the bowl prior to mixing.

ENJOY!

Our SalonSpa SERVICE TO EXPERIENCE is MASSAGE.

What is it: Massage is one of the oldest forms of healing known to man.  At BellaZenn, our massage services are one of our most popular appointments. Our Therapists are licensed healthcare professionals who are proficient in a variety of modalities that include Traditional Swedish, Pre-natal, Sports and Therapeutic massage.

Why We Like It: The benefits of massage are many. A one hour relaxing massage is the equivalent to three hours of sleep! Receiving massage strengthens the immune system. Studies indicate that regular massage can naturally increase the immune systems cytotoxic capacity- the activity level of the body’s natural killer cells. As we enter into another cold and flu season, what a great way to relax AND help your body naturally ward off those evil germs!

We all know that relieving stress is key to a healthier lifestyle. Our Massage Therapists can help you achieve that. Mention you read Wellness Wednesday and receive 10% off your next regular price massage session with either Jessica or Vanessa!

Wellness Wednesday ~ September 2012

September, Ahhh… The time of year to slow down after the hustle and bustle of another busy summer. September also means, for many, back to school; back to football, apple orchards with fresh brewed apple cider and all things fall.  What is it about the warm golden days,  cool evenings and rustling leaves that make this time of year so wonderful?  Whatever it is, we hope you can take time to enjoy the peacefulness as the Earth slowly “falls” asleep.

We took a little break from our traditional Wellness Wednesday format last month to tell you about all the exciting things happening at BellaZenn SalonSpa (a.k.a. the SalonSpa at Eartha Naturals). We can’t thank you enough for your continued patience as we make necessary changes to ensure the best experience and service at our SalonSpa.  We are blessed to work with you, our client friends, and couldn’t do what we do, without you!

And now, without further adieu, here’s an edition loaded with brain healthy things! We found a super food charged recipe, a fun brain boosting activity and SalonSpa services you won’t want to miss!

Welcome to Wellness

Our GOOD FOR YOU RECIPE this month is by Alisa Fleming of One Frugal Foodie (www.onefrugalfoodie.com) and author of Go Dairy Free: The Guide and Cookbook. Nutritious ingredients  get blended so smoothly into dairy free goodness you won’t even know you’re drinking health!

True Blue Smoothie

Ingredients: 1 medium  very ripe banana, broken into chunks, 1 cup frozen blueberries, ½ to 1 cup unsweetened, plain or vanilla milk alternative (almond milk, coconut milk beverage and rice milk go nicely), ½ cup packed fresh baby spinach leaves, ½ cup ice

Directions: Toss the banana, blueberries, ½ cup of the milk alternative into a blender, and process until smooth. Add the spinach and any optional add-ins (see below), and blend until those little green specks vanish.  Do not blend in too much “milk” at the beginning if you have a wimpy blender. You need some thickness to help grab and chop all of the spinach bits. If it is too liquidy at first, you may end up with chunks of spinach! Once everything is pureed, blend in more milk alternative until it reaches your desired consistency. If you’d like, blend in some ice for a frostier treat.

Optional Add-ins: sweetener, to taste (we like Sugar in the Raw or  Stevia), 1 tablespoon ground flax seed, ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1 to 2 tablespoon(s) protein powder of choice.

*If you’re not dairy free, never fear, this DOES taste de-lish with milk from a cow too!

__________________________________________________________

Do you like games? We hope so! We like fun games that help your brain stay strong.  Our GOOD FOR YOU ACTIVITY is Sudoku. According to an article at www.myhealthdeck.com titled The Benefits of Sudoku, researchers rank cracking sudoku puzzles daily among the top ten non-traditional and alternative ways to boosts brain power. We thought you’d enjoy  a brain workout, especially if you’re reading this at the salon while your color is processing J We do have the answer key available if you’d like to see how you did.

Anyone out the suffering from seasonal allergies (most commonly Hay fever)? If yes, ugh! We feel for you! Good news though - we do know of some natural ways to help ease your suffering!

We’ve mentioned this SalonSpa Service to Experience before but thought it was worth mentioning again since allergy sufferers often times get waxy ears from all the drainage.

EAR CANDLING

What is it: Ear Candling ( also known as coning or ear funneling) has been practiced for centuries.  It is an ancient method of removing excess wax from the ear and promoting a sense of well being.

What we do: In the privacy of our treatment room, the service provider will light a hollow candle made of muslin and beeswax and insert it into the ear. The heat from the candle creates a vacuum in the ear canal and draws out excessive earwax and other debris which may be present.

Why we like it: Excessive earwax buildup can cause discomfort, headaches, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), or vertigo. Ear Candling may help alleviate these conditions.  Also, ear candling may draw out fungus, infection, Candida and other debris from the outer and inner ear canals and the Eustachian tube through osmosis. While many have found this service relaxing, safe and effective, this service should never replace medical treatment for a serious condition.

Wellness Wednesday June 2012

Wellness Wednesday June 2012

At Eartha Naturals we care about YOU! All of you - what you put inside of you as well as what you use on the outside. If you’re reading this, most likely you’ve been to Eartha and have experienced the difference - the natural, non-toxic difference. From our hair care products and cosmetics to the tea room teas and treats, we strive to use the purest ingredients. At Eartha Naturals, where natural is beautiful, we research our products first and then pass the knowledge to you.

Summer is here and all things Eartha continue to be hot, hot, hot  - well, except for the tea in the tea room. We now have a variety of iced teas and coffee to keep you cool (there is still hot tea if you’re so inclined). Stop in for a glass or take it to go, either way, you’ll be happy you did!

Did we mention it’s June already?!? How did THAT happen? With Father’s Day on June  17th, we’re writing a week early AND focusing this edition of Wellness Wednesday on the guys. Yep, even guys love what Eartha has to offer! Ladies, if your guy hasn’t been to Eartha, we always have gift certificates available. Remember, Eartha is home to Sprouts Baby and Toddler Boutique so there’s sure to be something for the little guys too!

Welcome to Wellness

We have two services we think you’d like to know more about. One is geared for the guys and the other is something almost everyone can benefit from. The Services to Experience are BROW SHAPING/DEFINING and EAR CANDLING.

BROW SHAPING/DEFINING

What is it: A service designed to keep those eye brows under control. Trust us, whether we’re taming  a few stray hairs or using our liquid hair remover to fight the "unibrow", this service will make a man look younger instantly.

What we do: We examine the brows and decide a course of action. We use Nufree non-wax liquid hair remover.  Nufree is applied to the hair we need to remove and then quickly removed with a cloth strip (think pulling a band-aid off quickly).

Why we like it: It is a quick service that provides a finishing touch to a fantastic haircut. It can also be scheduled solo. Confidence boosting investment - $10.00

The GOOD FOR YOU recipe we’ve selected this month is NOT EDIBLE but will keep you from being the main course for the mosquitoes and biting flies that try to crash your next outdoor adventure. It is all natural, kid and pet safe.  The essential oils (EO) in this blend could be diffused or put on cotton balls or cedar chips (for use in closets or drawers). When applying to people or pets, please use the recommended amount of carrier oil (CO) below.

BUG BLEND

Essential Oils: 9 drops Tea Tree, 9 drops Peppermint, 6 drops Lavender and 3 drops Lemongrass

Mixed in a glass container (amber colored glass works best) with 108 drops of a Carrier Oil (almond oil or olive oil are two that are quite common).

To use on people:  apply blended oils to any exposed skin. To use on pets: put oil blend in a spray or mist bottle and mist onto pet. Please avoid the eyes of both people and pets.

Don’t want to mix your own? We do have Purple Prairie Botanicals Deet Free Bug Spray ($8.50) available at Eartha.

˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜ ˜

While both the SalonSpa and Healthy Skin and Body offer hair removal services, we understand that sometimes you need a quick shave. We chose Dr. Bronner’s Magic Organic Shave Gel as our Product of the Month.

Uses:We’re pretty sure that’s a no-brainer but, just incase - shave gels are products designed to lift hair and give moisture to offer a smooth glide when you shave, leaving the skin soft and smooth. This reduces the chance of further irritation and ingrown hair.

What’s in it: Organic Sucrose*, Organic White Grape Juice,  Organic Coconut Oil*, Potassium Hydroxide**, Organic Olive Oil*, Organic Shikakai Powder, Organic Fair Deal Hemp Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, Organic Corn Starch, Organic Lemongrass Oil, Organic Lemon Oil, Organic Lime Oil, Citric Acid, Tocopherol.

*CERTIFIED FAIR TRADE INGRIDIENTS

** None remains after saponifying oils into soap and glycerin

Why We Like It: Dr. Bronner’s is a Certified Fair Trade company. Fair Trade benefits farmers and their families with fair prices, wages and community funding. The Organic Sucrose, Coconut and Olive oils are all from Certified Fair Trade sources. More information at www.drbronner.com.

We think it is safe to say Spring has sprung! The days are getting warmer and the light is lasting longer. The birds are back, everything is budding and we couldn’t be more excited to help you get your spring on!  This month’s Wellness Wednesday is jam packed with info to get you thinking Spring!  Dig in and read on, Wellness Seekers!

 Welcome to Wellness

Our GOOD FOR YOU ACTIVITY this month is GARDENING. Gardening is a pastime that can be enjoyed by almost anybody. Since there are various kinds of gardens, all types of people, from the very young to the very old, from very healthy to those with poor health or disability, can enjoy and reap the benefits of gardening.

Believe It or Not Benefits: Gardening has so many benefits we almost don’t know where to start! We’ll try to keep it simple and focus on the mind/body benefits. Studies show that gardening not only promotes physical health but mental health too! People who enjoy gardening may also enjoy better nutrition. Physically speaking, gardening often requires weight bearing activity (like carrying water to plants, pushing a wheel barrow or moving large potted plants). Activities such as these not only strengthen the heart and other muscles but can also strengthen our bones by increasing bone density.

Mental health is promoted through relaxation and satisfaction. Gardens can be sensual places, captivating us by engaging all of our senses. Nurturing a garden from seed to harvest can be very rewarding. We increase our connection to the environment through active living and have a stronger sense of well being. Simply spending time in a garden allows us to take time for ourselves and lets us tune into nature’s slower, gentler rhythms.

Nutritionally, research continues to show eating fresh fruits and vegetables everyday is one of the most important things you can do for your health. A diet rich in fresh produce offers more energy, better weight management and possible protection from diseases like high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer.  Encouraging young gardeners  may be beneficial because they know what they grow and are willing to try a wider range of fruits and vegetables…Yes!

Realistic Lifestyle Incorporation: You can easily turn almost any space into a green space. There are several types of flowers both annual (plant yearly) and perennial (plant once and it comes back season after season) that can be planted in containers or baskets if you’re limited on space. On a rainy day, head to the library for inspiration, there are books dedicated to all types of gardens.  You can grow an edible garden on your porch using fruit boxes, pots or old basins and buckets. Kitchen windows make great places to grow fresh herbs. The UW Extension offers a community garden. For a small fee you get everything you need to grow and harvest your own plot. Contact the Taylor County UW Extension, USDA Service Center at (715)748- 3327 for availability and information. Like the seeds you are planting, start small and grow with your garden.

 *************************

The GOOD FOR YOUR PLANTS RECIPE we’ve selected this month comes from a recommended reading article in the February 2012 issue of Country  Living Magazine. In a new book by Gayla Trail called Easy Growing, the yougrowgirl.com blogger shares an organic approach to cultivating herbs and edible flowers

A Simple Recipe for All-Natural Fertilizer

1. Place a large bunch of roughly chopped fresh herbs in a bucket and add water (the ideal ratio is four parts water to one part herbs). Stir vigorously.

2.  Set the mixture aside for three days, stirring it a few times each day.

3. Strain out the herbs, and toss them into your compost bin or lay atop the soil around needy plants. Then spray the full-strength liquid directly onto plant leaves, or add a few cups to a watering can and pour around roots.

After all the gardening you’ll be doing the SALONSPA SERVICE TO EXPERIENCE is a MANICURE. Like most of the spa services a salon or spa has to offer,  manicures have traditionally been thought of as an indulgence and something only women have done. We’re here with a little insider info to say it isn’t so. Along with having great looking hands and nails, both women AND men can enjoy the health benefits that can be gained from regular manicures!

What Is It: By definition , a manicure is a cosmetic beauty treatment for the fingernails and hands performed by a licensed cosmetologist or nail technician. A manicure treatment can be just for the hands or nails, or can be for both.

What We Do: At Eartha Naturals SalonSpa we offer two natural nail services - the Short and Sweet Manicure where your hands and nails are cleaned, shaped to your preference, smoothed and polished . In the Element Eartha Manicure we cover all of the basics of the Short and Sweet but we take it up a notch and include exfoliation, massage and deep hydration with eco-fin while you relax and inhale the signature aroma of Eartha. We offer Spa Ritual Nail Color because we like the eco-friendly, vegan philosophy the company embraces (www.sparitual.com).

Why We Like It:Manicures promote the health of the nails and hands and there is an added benefit to the mind by allowing you to forget the day to day grind for awhile. There are various diseases of the nail that are preventable with regular manicures. Fungal infections, ingrown nails, misshapen nails and hard or brittle nails are among issues that can be solved with regular hand and nail maintenance.  Keeping your nails looking healthy and strong makes your hands more aesthetically pleasing. Having attractive hands and nails can evoke a sense of self confidence in a person which can impact other aspects of life. Manicures at Eartha are a great way to unwind and relax. The atmosphere here (and the accompanying hand massage) can melt away any stress.

*Mention you’ve read Wellness Wednesday and we’ll take 10% your next manicure service*

For this edition of Wellness Wednesday, we’re preparing to share some spring with you. The Eartha Naturals SalonSpa offers pedicures to get you feet out of shoe hibernation and ready for sunshine and sandals. Our Aestheticians from EN SalonSpa and Healthy Skin and Body are here to give you the need to know about SPF and sun safety; the tea room has some beautiful - yes, tea CAN be beautiful, cold teas to quench your thirst on a sunny afternoon; and Sprouts Baby and Toddler Boutique has a unique collection of quality kids clothes that will have your munchkins dressed to impress!

Welcome to Wellness!

Our GOOD FOR YOU RECIPE is one that found its way to EN SalonSpa Stylist/Owner, Chelsea Zenner’s Kitchen…she’s tweaked it a bit and we’ve tasted tested - it’s DELICIOUS! Most “healthy” bread recipes leave you with a loaf that could double as a door stop - not this one! Stop in and taste for yourself, samples available on April 18th Wellness Wednesday while they last.

COCONUT ZUCCHINI BREAD

Ingredients: ¾ C loosely packed shredded zucchini, 6 eggs, separated, ½ C coconut milk (or 2 more eggs), ½ C. coconut oil (or butter) melted (plus extra for greasing pan),  ½ C Truvia (Chelsea uses Stevia in the Raw), ½ tsp. vanilla, 1 ½ tsp. cinnamon, ½ tsp. sea salt, ¾ C coconut flour, 1 tsp. baking powder, chocolate chips to taste, ½ C. chopped pecans or walnuts (optional), unsweetened coconut flakes (optional topping)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9x5x3 inch loaf pan with coconut oil or butter. Separate 4 eggs into two bowls. Whip the egg whites until very fluffy. In the other bowl, blend together the 4 egg yolks, zucchini, coconut oil, coconut milk, sweetener, vanilla, cinnamon and salt. Then add the other 2 eggs (or 4 if not using coconut milk), one at a time, beating well after each addition. Combine coconut flour and baking powder and sift into batter. Blend until there are no lumps. Fold in nuts and chocolate chips. Gently fold in egg whites to the batter. Pour in greased pan. Top with unsweetened coconut flakes and bake for 60 minutes or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean.

In addition to being a no sugar recipe, this no grain delight offers Serotonin (eggs), GABA (coconut flour, milk & zucchini), Acetylcholine (yolks, coconut oil & milk) and Dopamine (eggs) all essential to a healthy brain. Enjoy!

______________________________________________________________________________________________

April 22nd is Earth Day and in honor of that, we chose an activity that benefits both you AND the environment. This month our GOOD FOR YOU ACTIVITY

is BIRD WATCHING (a.k.a. BIRDING)

Believe It or Not Benefits: Birds with out a doubt can increase our pleasure and quality of life. In an article published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, it was noted  there is evidence that contact with the natural world, including animals, plants, landscapes and wilderness - may offer health benefits. Birding is a way to relax and unwind. It’s a great activity to share as a family since people of all ages and abilities can participate. It gets pretty hard to worry about anything when watching these beauties of nature.

For the environment: According to Roger Tory Peterson, author of Peterson Field Guide - Birds of Eastern and Central America, birds are sensitive indicators of the environment. By observing and recording bird populations, people become more environmentally aware and the observations can detect possible environmental changes. Generally, people who appreciate the world around them are more apt to take care of it.

Realistic Lifestyle Incorporation: Get up and grab some binoculars. Head out and see who is flying about. What a great way to take advantage of a beautiful spring afternoon! Stuck at your cubicle all day? There are opportunities online as well. Search for “Decorah Eagles” and you’ll find yourself  in a live Eagle pair’s nest on a nature preserve in Iowa. This year they have three babies, all hatched late March and growing quickly.

HAIR/SKIN/NAIL SERVICE TO EXPERIENCE - ORGANIC FACIAL

What Is It: A service provided by our licensed Aestheticians to cleanse, exfoliate and rejuvenate tired, stressed skin.

What We Do: In the privacy of our treatment room you’ll have a short consultation with the providing aesthetician to determine the best facial for your skin type. Next, you’ll be given a moment to change (we provide a top for you to wear so your clothes are protected from products like mud or massage oil). Then, you’ll get settled on our warm and comfortable treatment table. The aesthetician will return and provide the service. A general sequence is cleanse, steam, exfoliate, massage and moisturize but may vary depending on your treatment plan. Approximate time allotted for a facial is 60 - 90 minutes and an investment of $50*.

Why We Like It: While this sounds like an indulgent luxury - it isn’t. The health benefits of a facial far outweigh the beauty benefits. Your skin is your body’s largest organ and a direct reflection of internal wellbeing. The major health benefits of  regular facials are the regulation of the immune system, detoxification and reduction in fluid build up. Facials can clear clogged pores, quench parched skin and remove dead skin cells. A facial also has a calming effect on the nervous system therefore it can help reduce stress and tension.

*Mention you read Wellness Wednesday and receive 10% off a facial!

_____________________________________________________________

As you recharge your skin with a facial and get ready to go out birding, we’ve got you covered -well, the part of you that sees the most sunshine anyway. Our  FEATURED PRODUCT is ARGAN OIL, a facial moisturizer with SPF 30.

Uses: In a light hydration formula with SPF 30 to block out the sun’s UVA (Ultra Violet Aging) and UVB (Ultra Violet Burning) rays, Argan oil, along with other nutrients, soften and nourish the skin. In addition to protecting against the sun’s UV rays, antioxidants provide protection against environmental damage to the skin. It also protects against skin cancer, fine lines and wrinkles, and dark sun/age spots.

What’s In It: Active Ingredient: Zinc Oxide. Inactive Ingredients: Organic Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Rgania Spinosa Kernel (Argan) oil, Rosa Canina Seed (Rosehip Oil) extract, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Extracts of Euphorbia Cerifera Cera ( Candelilla Wax), Organic Carmellia Sinensis (Green Tea) leaf, Rosmarinus Officinalis ( Rosemary Leaf), Origanum Vulgar (Oregano), Thymus Vulgaris (Thyme), Citrus Grandes (Grapefruit Seed), Hydrastis Canadensis (Goldenseal), Lonicera Caprifollium (Japanese Honeysuckle) & Cinnamomum Zeylanicum Bark (Cinnamon).

Why We Like It: Our Aestheticians recommend applying a product with SPF 30 to protect your skin, your face especially, anytime you’re going to be outdoors.  The nice thing about SPF 30 is you aren’t overexposed to irritating chemicals AND you still get a great tan!  Reapply as needed but especially if you’ve been sweating or swimming!

Wellness Wednesday March 2012

~ Brought to you by the Beauty and Wellness Professionals

of Eartha Naturals SalonSpa ~

Owned and operated by BellaZenn Enterprises, LLC

At Eartha Naturals we care about YOU! All of you- what you put inside of you as well as what you use on the outside. If you’re reading this, most likely you’ve been to our salon and have experienced the difference – the natural, non-toxic difference. From our hair care products and cosmetics to the tea room teas and treats, we strive to use the purest ingredients. At Eartha Naturals, where natural is beautiful, we research our products first and then pass the knowledge to you.

We’ve decided to incorporate our wellness philosophy into a feature we’re calling Wellness Wednesday. To start, one Wednesday a month we’re going to share a good for you recipe (we might even have some tasty, in house, samples), focus on a product from the Eartha Naturals Shop, recommend a wellness activity, enlighten you with the potential benefits and add anything else we can think of to share the wellness lifestyle with you. With Sprouts Baby & Toddler Boutique opening here at Eartha on March 14th, we decided to start with the kids. We hope you like it!

Welcome to Wellness!

Our first GOOD FOR YOU RECIPE is a tried measure for sneaking some veggies (and fruit) to your baby or toddler. We all know eating fruits and vegetables is one of the best ways to maintain good health but, as parents, we also know this isn’t something to easily convince our kids of.

Take 4oz. of your child’s favorite yogurt and mix in 1 to 2 oz. of a veggie puree. Mix very well and serve. YUM!

*Room temperature or cold purees work best*

Some personal favorites:

Peach yogurt with sweet potato puree or Blueberry yogurt with 1oz. green bean puree

For the baby or toddler feeding them self – add a little baby cereal to the mix. It’s a good source of iron and helps keep the yogurt on the spoon.

Products of the Month – ZUM RUB LAVENDER OR ZUM WEE RUB

Uses: Apply wherever your body needs some moisture. Chapped skin, cracked heels, cuticles, lips, healing scars, tattoos, poison ivy, sun burn, make up removal, bikini wax, frizzies. It works great on baby bums for diaper rash.

What’s in it: certified organic sunflower oil, grape seed oil, coconut oil, beeswax (natural, not refined or bleached), carnauba wax, shea butter, goat’s milk, Bulgarian lavender oil and vitamin E.

Why we like it:  Lavender, probably the best known of all essential oils, is a good antiseptic. Lavender is excellent for treating infections and a multitude of ailments including, insect bites, burns, headaches (even migraines) and nausea. Massaging with lavender oil promotes relaxation so rub some Zum on your baby (or yourself) after a bath or before bedtime.

Good for you activity – READING

Believe it or not benefits: Reading reduces stress! Studies have shown reading for just six minutes a day can reduce stress by 68%! Reading not only acts as a distraction from the outside stressors we face, it actually engages our mind and requires our full attention. Our minds don’t think about things causing stress when our full attention is given to whatever we’re reading. That’s like taking a mini vacation of the mind…Woo-hoo!

Since our focus is kids this month, here’s how reading benefits children: Reading together is a simple, enjoyable way for parents to take time out from the busy, hectic lifestyles common today and focus on family. Reading stories is a wonderful bonding experience and fosters meaningful one on one communication with our kids. It also helps develop a child’s creativity and the ability to use their own imagination.

Realistic Lifestyle Incorporation: For the kids, start with a story a day. Before nap time or bedtime, during bath time or while potty training, any time is better than not at all. Check out the Frances L. Simek Memorial Library, it’s a wonderful resource center and there are many reading programs offered like, 1,000 books before Kindergarten, which kids can participate in. On Fridays there is an awesome story time from 10:30-11:00 for kids 5 and younger.  Resources: www.littleonesreadingresource.com & www.sound-mind.org

For you, start with anything you enjoy. Pick up your favorite magazine and get reading. Who knew catching up on celebrity gossip could be considered a stress reducer!

Good for you salon service to experience: MINI MAX CRADLE CAP TREATMENT

What is it: A signature service designed with little heads in mind. During the treatment we’ll show you how to effectively control Infantile Seborrhea Dermatitis, also known as Cradle Cap.

What we do: We use a gentle, skin nourishing oil to loosen the yellow crust babies and young children experience on their scalps as their little bodies adjust to the world outside the womb.  We’ll teach you how to gently lift the loosened scales and then we’ll wash your baby’s hair/head using our Max Green Alchemy Scalp Rescue Shampoo. This service will take 30 to 45 minutes and is $12.00.

Why we like it: While Cradle Cap is generally mild and does not bother babies, it can be unsightly. This is another mom tested treatment that provides lasting, healthy scalp results. We use products that are extremely gentle to the scalp so there isn’t further irritation and excess oil production. Using the wrong things can confuse the already over active sebaceous glands. This is a service where we arm you with what you need to take care of your little one’s precious head right from the start.  Treatment schedule we follow: once every 8 weeks while the problem persists.

Thanks for reading this edition of Wellness Wednesday, if you have any questions please email us at earthasalonspa@yahoo.com. Be sure to like Eartha Naturals SalonSpa on Facebook to grow in beauty and wellness with us (and to be the first to know of exclusive treatment specials/discounts).

We hope your day is wonderfully well!
